Airdrie Family Wants You To “Pay it Forward”

Can you imagine having a normal day at home with your family, running around with your kids, only to be told hours later that the lump in your 3 year old’s abdomen, that you suspected was appendicitis, was in fact a tumour?

Well, that’s what happened to Airdrie’s Chris and Megan Crowell.  Beautiful, bright eyed Christian is fighting cancer and his family’s world was turned upside down in a matter of hours.

Christian has Stage 3 Rhabdomyosarcoma.  What a trooper - he has been through 7 chemotherapy sessions at Alberta Children’s Hospital.  He will continue to endure these chemo sessions for another 36 weeks, in addition to another surgery and 7 weeks of radiation.

In the midst of this overwhelmingly painful diagnosis comes the joy of living in a community that has pulled together to help this family.  Many have reached out in support in many different ways. Random people, groups and organizations offering prayer, time and money - whatever they can do to help - and most of these people will never realize the positive impact it has had on their family.

The Crowells are so overwhelmed with the kindness, support and generosity of Airdrionians that they want to “Pay it Forward” by hosting a bone marrow registration night in Christian’s name.  What a better way to gather the community so that Megan, Chris, Christian, Evelyn (2) and Ryan (8 months) can say THANK YOU for the support they’ve been given.  There is such a need for bone marrow donors, especially young males between the ages of 17 and 30.

On Monday, April 4, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., join the Crowell family for a visit and help them achieve their goal of 1000 online registrations by the end of June 2011.  Computers will be set up in the gym at A.E. Bower’s School, where Chris teaches grade 1. This is for the purpose of registering to become a potential bone marrow donor through onematch.com.  Once you register online, OneMatch will mail you a swab kit.  Instructions are provided for you to swab your cheeks and to return the swabs in the postage paid package.  From there, OneMatch will register your information in a central database.  If your DNA matches someone in need of bone marrow, OneMatch will then contact you. It is a simple and PAIN FREE process and you could save somebody’s life.

If you are unable to attend this registration event but still want to participate, you can register at onematch.ca.  Then please visit Christian’s blog at www.fightforchristian.com to notify Megan and Chris that you’ve registered with onematch.ca so that they can track the number of people who have registered in Christian’s honor.

Please help us reach our goal of 1000 registrations by June 30, 2011 and satisfy the crucial need for bone marrow donors across the world.

Volunteers…Make a Difference

Seniors, youth, children, adults, animals, and community - these are only a few of the areas that depend on the dedication of volunteers every day. Volunteerism and volunteers are an essential part of our community and are priceless resources to Airdrie and surrounding areas. Without dedicated, committed, generous, passionate, volunteers, many local organizations would not exist or thrive.

Thank you!! Two simple words that convey our heartfelt appreciation for all the volunteers that help build Airdrie and surrounding areas through volunteering their time. Whether it is spending time delivering food to those in need or mentoring a local youth, time is what is making a difference in our community. Time that volunteers give to make a difference.

Volunteer Airdrie, in partnership with Here’s the Scoop and Watches N’ More, are asking you to identify a volunteer and tell us how they have made a difference in the community or in your life. Once a month, a volunteer will be recognized in Here’s the Scoop and honoured with a special recognition gift from Watches N ’More. Ballot boxes with testimonial forms will be located around Airdrie and area. As well, testimonial forms and more information on how to recognize a volunteer is available at www.volunteerairdrie.ca.

Let’s take this time to honor the thousands of wonderful people who have devoted their time, energy and hearts to the community. Recognize that special someone today and say THANK YOU!

STUDENT VS TEACHER HOCKEY GAME TO RAISE FUNDS

The Students for Change group of Bert Church High School is organizing “The Bert Church Classic,” a student vs. teacher hockey game. The Bert Church Classic will be taking place April 8th, beginning at 3 p.m. at the Ron Ebbeson Arena.

Students’ for Change encourages everyone to join the fun to help raise funds to build a school in Sierra Leone in partnership with the Free the Children organization.

Alongside the hockey game will be a silent auction and raffle prizes. Admission to the event is $3.00. All proceeds go to the project.

Students’ for Change looks forward to seeing you all!

The Ride to Conquer Cancer's Team "What If..." held a Cabaret Benefit Concert in Airdrie on March 19 with special guests Mark Lorenz and Kenny Holliday entertaining the crowd.

The team would like to thank each and every individual that came out and supported our cause and brought us that much closer to our goal for the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

"This is such a meaningful cause for me," said Kevin Hughes, Team Ring Leader. "I don't know anyone that hasn't been affected by this dreaded disease and I know my brother Pat is smiling down at me. Thank you to such an awesome community for all the support. Together we raised $8725.91. THANK YOU. A special thanks, of course, to all the businesses that donated prizes and silent auction items. WOW!"
